Grammy nominated New Cuban Express sextet interprets the poems of Jose Marti’s Versos Sencillos, written in New York in the late 1800s by this Cuban national hero, revolutionary philosopher and poet. Through contemporary jazz and Afro-Cuban music, the arrangements interweave contemporary post bop harmony, ancient percussion of the African batá drums, chamber music-like sections, chants, call-and-response techniques originating in Africa.

Martí en Nueva York by Manuel Valera and New Cuban Express has been made possible with support from Chamber Music America’s 2013 New Jazz Works: Commissioning and Ensemble Development program funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
