With two weeks of stellar programming, Harlem Stage honors Mary Lou Williams (1910 – 1981), a seminal figure in the history of American jazz. Pianist,composer, arranger for such bandleaders as Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman, she was friend, mentor, and teacher to Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and many others.

Join the incomparable Geri Allen, internationally renowned composer and pianist, as she explores the musical continuity and influences of Mary Lou Williams from Jelly Roll Morton to Cecil Taylor. Carmen Lundy will bring to life the words of Mary Lou Williams through song and dialog as extracted and scripted by celebrated writer Farah Jasmin Griffin. The music will include original music of Williams as well as new works by Geri Allen composed especially for this event, all under the theatrical direction of Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning artist S. Epatha Merkerson.
