SOUNDING DIASPORA: Music & Musings
Celebrating the great connection that Afro-Cuban music and Jazz have made to Harlem, this first evening begins with a lively dialogue between Terry and Marta Moreno Vega, author, scholar, and founder of the Caribbean Cultural Center. The discussion is followed by Terry performing a jazzy blend of Afro-Cuban music.
Raised in a musical family, Yosvany Terry received classical musical training from the National School of Art and Amadeo Roldan Conservatory in Cuba. Since his arrival in New York in 1999, Terry has been a part of the new generation of musicians who are redefining jazz, sharing the stage with Roy Hargrove, Steve Coleman, Eddie Palmieri, Dave Douglass, Dafnis Pietro, Avishai Cohen, the International Vamp Band Jeff "Tain" Watts, Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, and bassist Avishai Cohen.
Dr. Marta Moreno Vega, a Santeria Priestess, and university professor in New York City is the author of “The Alter of My Soul,” a story of that traces the journey of Santeria from Africa to the Americas. She is the founder of the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute and former director of El Museo del Barrio and the Association of Hispanic Arts.
