Grammy nominated New Cuban Express sextet interprets the poems of Jose Marti’s Versos Sencillos, written in New York in the late 1800s by this Cuban national hero, revolutionary philosopher and poet. Through contemporary jazz and Afro-Cuban music, the arrangements interweave contemporary post bop harmony, ancient percussion of the African batá drums, chamber music-like sections, chants, call-and-response techniques originating in Africa.
