Braxton Cook's Charlie Parker Centennial Tribute

  • Harlem Stage 150 Convent Avenue New York United States (map)

Braxton Cook is one of this generation’s most exciting emerging voices in the jazz world. Not only does he exhibit world-class virtuosity on the alto saxophone but he is also a uniquely talented vocalist and songwriter whose sound blends Jazz, Soul, R&B, and Alternative music into a fresh new sound all his own. Braxton shares the influence Charlie ‘Yardbird’ Parker aka Bird has had on his artistry and the jazz cannon. Bird is recognized as the architect of Bebop which evolved during the tumultuous period in the decades after Emancipation. Black and Creole people of New Orleans founded social clubs with bands before there was a term Jazz. This music was resistance music as it was sound to Black Americans building a future together in the face of repression. Mr. Parkers legacy precedes the commercialization of jazz and continues to inspire across the globe. After the performance JOIN US LIVE ON YOUTUBE (7:30pm EST) for a discussion with Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah  and Harlem Stage Executive Director, Pat Cruz, on the legacy of Bird and the future of protest music.
