E-Moves Part I features two phenomenal dancers and choreographers, Carolina Rivera and Ephrat Asherie. Carolina Rivera will perform her work, Genus, and Ephrat Asherie will perform her work, UnderScored. Afterward, they will discuss their respective pieces with award winning dancer and choreographer, Cynthia Oliver.

Genus by Carolina Rivera

"Genus" in Latin means "origin." In biology, it is a term used to define a closely related group through common descent before the individuals are separated into different categories and subgroups.

Inspired by the composting process and how everything comes from the earth and eventually returns to the earth to set the beginning of a new life cycle. In this work, we take a journey from our birth, how we all originated from the same source. To how some of us leave our home searching for a place where our dreams can bear fruit. A journey in which we find other travelers, in which we sometimes take turns to lift each other when our feet grow tired, in which we create COMMUNITY. Wherever we are in the world, there's a deep sense of connection to the source, to the earth, coming from our ancestors, running through our veins as blood memory—a calling. Through this concept, we explore the immigration "crisis" that has grown for years, taking us to this point where families walk thousands of miles looking for a chance to survive only to find a closed door. This subject touches me deeply, not only because I'm an immigrant myself but also because I see in these children the face of my future child, the face of my people.

Regardless of who you are, where you were born, or which path you choose in life. We are all part of the same GENUS, homo/human, and we will ALL return to the earth when our time comes.

UnderScored by Ephrat Asherie

UnderScored is a multi-faceted project rooted in the intergenerational stories and memories of NYC underground club heads. Created in collaboration with legendary elders from the underground dance community, the cast ranges in age from age 26-78. This project takes shape as a series of performances, community based events and an oral history archive to be housed at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library. This excerpt of UnderScored, filmed at the Harlem Stage Gatehouse and co-presented by Harlem Stage and Works & Process at the Guggenheim, features club legends Michele Saunders and Archie Burnett who perform and collaborate with Ephrat Asherie Dance to explore the ever-changing physical and musical landscape of New York City’s underground dance scene.
